Good lot of five pre-World War I German cartridges boxes, all approx. 6 ½" x 3 ¾" x 2”, all believed to have been used with the Mauser M1871 and Gewehr 1888 service rifles. Three are fitted with individual cartridge loops within, while two lack these loops and are capable of holding rifle rounds on en-bloc or stripper clips. One is maker-marked “A. Dahl, Barmen”, while a second is marked within the lid and dated “1888”, although most of the marking is obscured by the period paper label of a New York military surplus importer and costume supplier. A third example bears a name lightly inscribed within the lid, and a fourth bears regimental numbers within the lid, and the stamped date “1880” on the exterior. All are fitted with various belt loops and securing straps, some broken and some missing. A good group overall, showing interesting variations in construction.
