French Model 1822/1842 percussion pistol, 7 ¾" barrel, 13 ½" overall, faintly marked on the lockplate “Mre. Imp'ale. de Tulle”, for the Tulle Arsenal. This Model 1822 was originally constructed as a flintlock weapon, but was converted to percussion, becoming the Model 1842. The original lockplate has been replaced with an example lacking the pan, frizzen, and frizzen spring. A proof mark in the crown over "B" within a shield appears above the arsenal mark, while the barrel tang is very faintly marked “Mle. 1822”, and the rear of the barrel bears the serial number "1912" and several proofmarks on the left-hand side. The right-hand side of the barrel is marked “S 1861” beneath the wood line, believed to be the date of its conversion from flintlock to percussion. Numerous additional proof marks appear around the rear of the barrel, including the designation "F 48", which also appears inside the stock. The combination barrel band and side plate are brass, as are the trigger guard and the butt cap, which bears two inspector's marks and is fitted with an iron lanyard ring. The bore is approx. .75-caliber and shows shallow rifling, with a large ramrod faintly marked "489[...]" secured within a hole in the brass barrel band. The barrel is also fitted with a large, bulbous front sight with a simple notch rear sight at the barrel tang. The stock appears to be of oil-finished walnut, and shows a minor crack to the left-hand side intersecting the rear of the side plate. The barrel shows oxidation overall, with some active rust beneath the barrel band, but with no resultant pitting. The muzzle is slightly nicked, and the bore shows slight active rust. The brass fittings remain bright, and the barrel band and side plate appear to have been subjected to a period repair which remade each as a separate piece, where they would have originally been manufactured as a single component. The lock mechanism still cocks and fires very strongly. NRA grade good to very good.
