(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. IKE FRETS ABOUT PATTON'S MEDICAL CONDITION Outstanding personal content T.L.S. “Ike” with holograph postscript initialed “D”, 1p. 8vo. on War Department, Chief of Staff letterhead, Washington, Dec. 12, 1945. Eisenhower directs his letter to Gen. Geoffrey Keyes, a close friend and subordinate of Gen. George S. Patton who was integral in the invasion of Sicily where he commanded the portion of the Seventh Army composed of the 2nd Armored Division, the 3rd Infantry Division and the 82nd Airborne Division. Here, at war’s end, Ike accepts congratulations for his new position...and adds an important postscript. In part: “...Your thoughtful message of congratulations on behalf of the officers and men of the Seventh Army is deeply appreciated...The accomplishments of the Seventh Army are a source of pride to all of us. I know under your command it shall continue to be an outstanding organization...” In his own hand, Ike adds a thoughtful postscript: “...I’m fearfully upset about George [Patton] – how I hope and pray he will make the grade! D”. Folds, else fine. With a “Headquarters Seventh Army” envelope upon which is typed a note (probably by Keyes) stating that the letter had been delivered by a courier who stated that the original transmittal envelope, presumably reading “Chief of Staff”, could not be kept by Keyes. Nine days after Eisenhower wrote this letter, Patton would die from injuries sustained in a car crash on December 8th. His friend Keyes would be at his side.
