Highly decorated helmet worn by a member of Russian Czar Nicolas II's personal guard, constructed of burnished brass with a low visor and "lobster tail"-style rear guard. An enameled Imperial Russian eagle appears at center surrounded by an enameled blue ring bearing the Cyrillic motto "For Faith and Loyalty", all within a bright metal starburst at front center. The helmet is topped with the impressive figure of a two-headed eagle in silvered metal alloy, capped with a Romanov crown. A grey leather chinstrap protected by metal scales is affixed over the front visor by a metal roundel on each side, with the right-hand side also displaying a cockade painted with yellow, black and silver corps colors. The undersides of both bills are lined with velvet, the front visor in black and the rear guard in orange, while the interior of the dome is fitted with a black leather sweatband and a black velvet liner, adjustable by means of a drawstring. No maker's marks or labels are visible, but recycled newspaper bearing Cyrillic characters is visible underneath the sweatband. Unfortunately, the eagle at top is broken at the ankles and partially repaired, and the right foot has also lost the screw attaching it to the crown, but could be easily replaced. The brass exterior shows patina overall, and the interior velvet has faded slightly, still a very fine, visually arresting example. Estimated in accordance with condition.
