An intriguing souvenir of World War II, an enameled iron street sign, 29 3/4" x 6", identifying the "Barrenstrasse" in Bremen. The sign is marred by two prominent bullet holes at the top edge, with the surrounding enamel flaked away and the underlying iron oxidized on the obverse and reverse. The reverse bears an ink or paint inscription, likely added by a British soldier: "Souvenir of Bremen Germany April 1945". Beside this is affixed a small b/w snapshot of a policeman directing traffic on a city street, with a handwritten label affixed to the bottom edge, reading: "Souvenir of Bremen - Jerry policeman on duty in Barrenstrasse square 26 April 1945. Three days earlier I nearly had my head taken off on the corner of the house in the background when we were clearing the city by a Jerry." Shows additional soiling and oxidation overall, else very good.
