booklet copy of The Constitution of the United States, 30pp. 8vo., Washington,
D.C., 1968, boldly signed on the cover by six Supreme Court Justices, including:
WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS, WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, POTTER STEWART,
THURGOOD MARSHALL, HARRY S. BLACKBURN, and BYRON R. WHITE.
In near mint condition. $300-500
1027. JOHN S. BARBOUR (1790-1855) Member of Virginia legislature and
constitutional convention. He was an early supporter of freehold suffrage. A.L.S.
"J. S. Barbour" 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 19, [?], to Sec. of State
William Marcy concerning an appointment of General D. B. Layne as Marshall of
Western Virginia. Very good. $40-60
1028. DAVID J. BREWER (1837 - 1910) Associate Justice of the Supreme
Court. Good content T.L.S. on Supreme Court letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington,
Feb. 19, 1891, in part: "...I did not think that the enemy of all speakers
was sitting at my feet, and taking down everything I was saying. If I had supposed
the printer was to follow my talk, I should have endeavored to prepare something
more worthy of presentation...But I bow to the inevitable. You have got what
I said, and I accept what I cannot help...". A few spots at lower-left corner,
else very good. $75-100
1029. HENRY CLAY (1777 - 1852) American politician, the "Great Pacificator"
who supported the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 which sought
to avoid a civil war on the issue of states' rights and slavery. partly-printed
D.S. "Brown & Clay" as attorney, 1p. 8vo., Fayette Co. [n.d.], a
document in which Clay and his partner commence a suit against one William Creath.

1030. ALBERT GALLATIN (1761 - 1849) Jefferson's Secretary of the Treasury
and a peace negotiator after the War of 1812. L.S. as Secretary of the Treasury,
1p. 4to., [Washington], Feb. 9, 1807, to Benjamin Austin, the Commissioner of
Loans in Boston enclosing "...an account received from Adams & Rhodes..."
and requesting that he certify it. Left margin chipped, otherwise very good.$60-80
1031. HANNIBAL HAMLIN (1809 - 1891) Vice President of the United
States under Abraham Lincoln and prominent abolitionist. Group of four pieces
including an L.S. on Custom House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Boston, Oct. 5, 1865
concerning the decline in American shipping during the Civil War and recommending:
"...Ship builders should be encouraged in their work of adding to the tonnage
of the United States..." and requesting information on the matter from his
correspondent in Kennebunkport. Together with another L.S. 1p. 8vo., Washington,
May 21, 1860 requesting a duplicate check. Also included are two examples of
his franking signature on small slips. The letters bear usual folds, light soiling,
otherwise very good. Four pieces.$100-150
1032. CHARLES EVANS HUGHES (1862 - 1948) Chief Justice of the Supreme
Court (1930-41), Secretary of State (1921-25), defeated by Wilson in a try for
the presidency. T.L.S. on his legal letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, May 7, 1926
to journalist Mark Sullivan. In part: "...I have spoken of your book to many
persons and I shall continue to speak of it...I think everyone who is interested
in the history of our times should read it...". Very good. $50-75
1033. CORDELL HULL (1871 - 1955) American statesman, Secretary of
State under Franklin D. Roosevelt, awarded the Nobel Prize (1945). Nice T.L.S.
as Secretary of State, 1p. 4to., Washington, Jan. 23, 1939, to Hubert Frank
Jukubovsky, in part: "...I wish to thank you for your cordial letter...and
to assure you of my sincere appreciation of your generous comment regarding
my work in connection with the Pan American Conference at Lima, Peru...".
Handsomely matted with a portrait of Hull, and set into a nice light wood frame.

1034. ROBERT TODD LINCOLN (1843- 1926) American lawyer and son of
Abraham Lincoln, served with Grant and was Secretary of War. A.L.S. on mourning
stationery, 2pp. 8vo., London, July 1, 1890 to powerful Senator John S. Sherman.
In part: "...I think I now understand clearly the situation. With your permission,
I will retain the printed report...". Second page a bit toned, else very
good.$75-100
1035. ELIHU ROOT (1845 - 1937) Secretary of State in Theodore Roosevelt's
cabinet, awarded the 1912 Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation in European and
Latin American disputes. Early A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., New York, Mar. 6, 1876 to
a fellow attorney, in part: "...I just learned from Mr. Evarts that he has
finished his case before Judge Johnson & expects to go on with our Claflin
[?] tomorrow morning...". Very good. $75-100
1036. THADDEUS STEVENS (1792 - 1868) U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania
instrumental in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. D.S. 2pp. 4to. (pasted together),
[n.p., 1851], his signature on a subscription list for a series of lectures
to be delivered by Prof. Koeppen on the history of western civilization. Moderate
soiling, otherwise very good. $40-60
1037. HENRY A. WALLACE (1888 - 1965) American politician, Secretary
of Agriculture, Secretary of Commerce, and Vice President under Franklin D.
Roosevelt. Handsome vintage S.P., a head and shoulders cabinet card, 4 1/2"
x 6 1/2" sepia, very boldly signed in the blank bottom margin. Handsomely set
in white matting and framed in a simple black frame. In very good condition,
ideal for display.$75-100
1038. DANIEL WEBSTER (1782 - 1852) American lawyer and statesman
who verbally jousted with Calhoun in the Senate and later supported Clay's compromise
measures on slavery. A.L.S., 2pp. 12mo., [n.p., n.d. "Sunday Morning"]
to Mr. Eliot regarding an upcoming dinner. In part: "...Two or three friends
from Mass[achusetts], with Tariff ideas in their heads, arrived last night,
& will dine with me today, at 3 o'clock - for a plain family dinner. Will
you...be so kind as to join me...". Handsomely matted and framed, attached
to a matted and framed back piece with a biographical plaque and an image of
Webster. Usual folds, otherwise very good condition. Not examined out of frame.$150-250
1039. 19TH CONGRESS Good content book, Acts Passed At the First Session
of the Nineteenth Congress of the United States, Washington: Davis and Force,
1826, 107pp. small 4to. paper bound. Acts published include an act to appropriate
funds to further negotiate and carry out treaty stipulations with the Cherokee,
Creek, Sock, Fox, Iowa, Quapaw and Choctaw nations as well as the full text
of formal treaties including agreements with the Creeks, Sioux, Chippewa and
many others. Also included is a treaty with Colombia printed in both English
and Spanish; an act funding two American observers to Simon Bolivar's Panama
Congress convened to attempt to form a Latin American confederation. Binding
and pages loose, page edges chipped and rough, light soiling, overall just good
condition.
