(1857 - 1939) Pope who signed the Lateran Treaty with Mussolini in 1929 establishing Vatican City, later denounced anti-Semitism, Communism and Nazism in encyclicals. Extraordinarily attractive hand-painted and calligraphied D.S. "Pius PP XI" as Pope, 1p. 15" x 26", [Vatican City, n.d.], a papal blessing and full indulgence rendered unto one "Helen, William S. James Butler" provided that upon the hour of his death the recipient should be "truly sorry for...sins, even though unable to confess them...". The document bears a superb 10" x 13" silver tinted print full-length photo of the Pope at center. Countersigned by ARCHBISHOP CARDINAL CREMOSINI, with blind-embossed papal seal at bottom. Framed in gilt. Foxing to edges, a bit of wrinkling and toning, but overall very good condition, and a fine, oversize example. Not examined out of frame.
