1423. HEDY LAMARR'S LOOKALIKE DOLL (1913 - 2000) American actress, a
dark-haired beauty who often appeared in films as the mysterious heroine. A
neat little gypsy fortune-teller doll owned by Lamarr, 14" tall with papier-mâché
painted face, dressed in an ornate gypsy costume with necklace and holding three
tarot cards. Franklin's notarized letter of provenance accompanies the lot,
and reads in part: "...Hedy Lamarr's doll was obtained from the actress personally
by me, Joe Franklin, in the 1980's while Lamarr was making plans to move...Even
after Lamarr withdrew from public life, our friendship continued and I would
visit her very often at her residence...Lamarr herself related the origins of
the doll, that it had been sent by a fan who thought it looked so much like
her...". Also included is a color photo of Franklin holding the doll. The
doll is slightly soiled and worn, but not more than one would expect from a
fifty-year-old souvenir! $300-500
1424. JAMES CAGNEY (1923 - 1977) American soprano, noted especially
for her dramatic force and bel canto repertoire. An important Cagney item, Cagney's
personal copies of the sheet music and lyrics from his last musical film, Never
Steal Anything Small. The approx. 55pp. of folio sheet music includes the
title song (two copies of which are signed by Cagney as "Cagney" at top
in pencil, "Helping Our Friends", "I'm Sorry, I Want a Ferrari", "Old Fashioned
Political Rally", "Come to Order, Men", "Innocent Appearance" and "Looking for
An Honest Face". Some of the music bears holograph corrections and additions,
with one excerpt completely holograph, which may or may not have been done by
Cagney. Maxwell Anderson and Allie Wrubel are credited with the lyrics and music,
copyrighted in 1957 by Allisons Music, Inc. The film Never Steal Anything
Small was released in 1959, and starred Cagney as Jack MacIllaney, a not-so-honest
union boss who stops at nothing to win an election, and cheats, sings, and dances
his way to the top. A great Cagney collectible, overall very good condition.

of signatures on a single document, a contract between producer and MGM founder
LOUIS B. MAYER (1885-1957) representing MGM, and Gone With the Wind
producer DAVID O. SELZNICK (1938-1965), representing RKO. The contract,
2pp. 4to., is dated Aug. 15, 1932 in Los Angeles and concerns the loaning of
actor Neil Hamilton by RKO to MGM at the rate of $1,750 per week, plus additional
considerations. Both have signed at the conclusion of the contract, and have
also twice initialed a change in the text. Interestingly, about 35 years later
actor Neil Hamilton was cast as Commissioner Gordon in the Batman television

stage magician. A fine Blackstone piece, an autograph album, 100pp. approx.,
with 23 pp. with signatures and inscriptions, small quarto, [numerous localities,
1936-1937] presented by the performers and crew from Harry Blackstone's travelling
show to Ella Jane (Thomas) Fischer, Harry Blackstone Jr.'s tutor. The album
features a fine signature of Harry Blackstone with an inscription: "To Ella
my son's hooptudoo Toy Try is not Chinese just plain American of the early ages
Harry Blackstone 1936 @ Park Central Hotel New York City". Besides many
members of Blackstone's touring show, other signatories include TED SELLES
and WALTER GIBSON: "Best wishes to Ella from the author of `The Shadow'.
Walter Gibson/Maxwell Grant". Also included are a few gag inscriptions written
by fellow tour members including Al Capone and James Whitcomb Riley. Spine a

portrait but of the young man to whom Blackstone inscribes the book, beneath

acerbic T.L.S.'s signed in various colored indelible pencil, 3pp. total, 4to.,
Rochester, ca. 1965. In small part: "...Lillian Gish amused me...She is built
for the plow. Cameras and costumes refined her...[my family] never gave a fart
for me after my money ran out and I am feeling no sorrow for the estrangement...[my
brother told me] what a failure I was, that I was `kicked out of Paramount',
and that I had always been a whore...I would be lying if I did not own up to
the fact that this little pansy-pleasing cult centered around me does not give
me some satisfaction...". Brooks also alludes to the marriage of Virginia
Cherrel and Cary Grant: "...she was finally fed up sleeping in the middle...with

her to her boyfriend Peter LeBlanc while Joplin was home in Port Arthur Texas
in 1965. The front of the card reads: "I'm sending you this card because it
looked so sad and lonely on the rack and I thought you would make it feel gay
and happy and wanted...", with the inside reading: "...like you did for me...".

lists the group's impressive accomplishments that year along with photographs
