1420. JEAN HARLOW (1911 - 1937) Sex symbol of 1930s who established stardom and initiated a nationwide craze for platinum-blonde hair with Hell's Angels (1930). Died of ureic poisoning during filming of Saratoga. Rare authentic signature on a 3 3/4" x 3" beige slip: "Sincerely yours Jean Harlow". Very good to fine, with ample room for matting.

1421. INGRID BERGMAN (1915 - 1982) Leading American dramatic actress and star of Casablanca and Joan of Arc. Fine vintage S.P. 8" x 10" b/w, a youthful portrait showing the beautiful actress in a smiling, informal pose. Boldly signed at left in black ink and fine. $300-400

1422. CLARK GABLE (1901 - 1960) American film actor known for his portrayal of rough, romantic heroes, most notably in Gone With the Wind. Partly-printed D.S. "Clark Gable", a check drawn on his personal account, Sherman Oaks, Ca., Feb. 24, 1955 making a $8.00 payment. Punch cancel clear of signature, very good with a large, bold signature.

1423. HEDY LAMARR'S LOOKALIKE DOLL (1913 - 2000) American actress, a dark-haired beauty who often appeared in films as the mysterious heroine. A neat little gypsy fortune-teller doll owned by Lamarr, 14" tall with papier-mâché painted face, dressed in an ornate gypsy costume with necklace and holding three tarot cards. Franklin's notarized letter of provenance accompanies the lot, and reads in part: "...Hedy Lamarr's doll was obtained from the actress personally by me, Joe Franklin, in the 1980's while Lamarr was making plans to move...Even after Lamarr withdrew from public life, our friendship continued and I would visit her very often at her residence...Lamarr herself related the origins of the doll, that it had been sent by a fan who thought it looked so much like her...". Also included is a color photo of Franklin holding the doll. The doll is slightly soiled and worn, but not more than one would expect from a fifty-year-old souvenir! $300-500

1424. JAMES CAGNEY (1923 - 1977) American soprano, noted especially for her dramatic force and bel canto repertoire. An important Cagney item, Cagney's personal copies of the sheet music and lyrics from his last musical film, Never Steal Anything Small. The approx. 55pp. of folio sheet music includes the title song (two copies of which are signed by Cagney as "Cagney" at top in pencil, "Helping Our Friends", "I'm Sorry, I Want a Ferrari", "Old Fashioned Political Rally", "Come to Order, Men", "Innocent Appearance" and "Looking for An Honest Face". Some of the music bears holograph corrections and additions, with one excerpt completely holograph, which may or may not have been done by Cagney. Maxwell Anderson and Allie Wrubel are credited with the lyrics and music, copyrighted in 1957 by Allisons Music, Inc. The film Never Steal Anything Small was released in 1959, and starred Cagney as Jack MacIllaney, a not-so-honest union boss who stops at nothing to win an election, and cheats, sings, and dances his way to the top. A great Cagney collectible, overall very good condition. $500-700

1425. LOUIS B. MAYER AND DAVID O. SELZNICK An exceedingly rare combination of signatures on a single document, a contract between producer and MGM founder LOUIS B. MAYER (1885-1957) representing MGM, and Gone With the Wind producer DAVID O. SELZNICK (1938-1965), representing RKO. The contract, 2pp. 4to., is dated Aug. 15, 1932 in Los Angeles and concerns the loaning of actor Neil Hamilton by RKO to MGM at the rate of $1,750 per week, plus additional considerations. Both have signed at the conclusion of the contract, and have also twice initialed a change in the text. Interestingly, about 35 years later actor Neil Hamilton was cast as Commissioner Gordon in the Batman television series. Fine condition. $400-600

1426. JOSEPHINE BAKER (1906 - 1975) Black American entertainer and a European sensation, renowned for her jazz singing, dancing and extravagant costumes. A fabulous, oversize vintage I.S.P. 11" x 13" b/w, 1951, showing Baker in a sumptuous satin gown leaning against a large pillar. Boldly inscribed at lower left: "To Billy From Jim [?] Joe NY 1951". Creasing to all four corners, paper loss to upper right corner, and wear to edges, otherwise good. A dazzling image, worthy of display!$300-400

1427. LOUIS ARMSTRONG (1900 - 1971) "Satchmo", American jazz musician and inventor of scat singing, remembered for his trumpet excellence and raspy singing. Fine vintage I.S.P. 10" x 8" b/w, a super image of Armstrong with trumpet in hands and a huge grin on his face, boldly inscribed at top right in bright green ink: "To Glenriette Lapene from Louis Armstrong". Very good condition, ideal for display.$250-350

1428. LOUIS ARMSTRONG A most unusual relic, a pair of vintage white kid gloves, 18" opera length, ca. 1930s, one of which Armstrong has signed "Louis Armstrong" in bright blue ink! The gloves are made of wonderfully soft leather, and are in very fine condition. Moderate smearing to the signature, else very good condition. A neat relic...fit to be worn! $200-300

1429. SARAH BERNHARDT (1844 - 1923) French stage actress known for her remarkable voice, emotional acting, and controversial private life. Lovely S.P. 4" x 6" b/w, a touching portrait showing Bernhardt in costume from the waist, up, hands clasped in prayer. Mounted, boldly signed on mount directly below image. Matted in bright orange linen and set into a lovely gilt frame. In very good condition, unexamined out of frame. $150-200

1430. SARAH BERNHARDTA.L.S. "Sarah" 1p. sm. 8vo., Provence, [1895], on carte-pneumatique stationery to E. Balvet in French, untranslated. Very good. $100-150

1431. HARRY BLACKSTONE (1885 - 1965) American magician, a pre-eminent stage magician. A fine Blackstone piece, an autograph album, 100pp. approx., with 23 pp. with signatures and inscriptions, small quarto, [numerous localities, 1936-1937] presented by the performers and crew from Harry Blackstone's travelling show to Ella Jane (Thomas) Fischer, Harry Blackstone Jr.'s tutor. The album features a fine signature of Harry Blackstone with an inscription: "To Ella my son's hooptudoo Toy Try is not Chinese just plain American of the early ages Harry Blackstone 1936 @ Park Central Hotel New York City". Besides many members of Blackstone's touring show, other signatories include TED SELLES and WALTER GIBSON: "Best wishes to Ella from the author of `The Shadow'. Walter Gibson/Maxwell Grant". Also included are a few gag inscriptions written by fellow tour members including Al Capone and James Whitcomb Riley. Spine a tad loose and rubbed, some scratching to boards, otherwise very good. $200-300

1431A HARRY BLACKSTONE Superb set of two magic books, each bearing signed portraits by Blackstone, includes: Inside Magic, by George L. Boston, New York, 1947, bearing a terrific ink signed self-portrait on the title page, with Blackstone's Secrets of Magic, New York, 1929, bearing a similar portrait but of the young man to whom Blackstone inscribes the book, beneath which he adds: "May you enjoy these tricks as well as I. Harry Blackstone 1940". Very good. Two pieces. $200-300

1432. LOUISE BROOKS (1906 - 1985) Progressive American silent film star whose bobbed haircut became a national rage. Good lot of three fine content, acerbic T.L.S.'s signed in various colored indelible pencil, 3pp. total, 4to., Rochester, ca. 1965. In small part: "...Lillian Gish amused me...She is built for the plow. Cameras and costumes refined her...[my family] never gave a fart for me after my money ran out and I am feeling no sorrow for the estrangement...[my brother told me] what a failure I was, that I was `kicked out of Paramount', and that I had always been a whore...I would be lying if I did not own up to the fact that this little pansy-pleasing cult centered around me does not give me some satisfaction...". Brooks also alludes to the marriage of Virginia Cherrel and Cary Grant: "...she was finally fed up sleeping in the middle...with Randolph Scott on the other side...I despise Hollywood. Always did!". Very good. $100-150

1433. CAB CALLOWAY (1907 - 1993) American musician and bandleader most remembered for his hit song "Minnie the Moocher". Vintage I.S.P. 8" x 10" b/w, an early view of Calloway showing him half-length in a tuxedo, arms crossed across his chest. Inscribed and signed: "Hi-de-hi Cab Calloway". A few trivial stains in two margins easily mat-out, else very good.$100-150

1434. GARY COOPER (1901 - 1961) American film star and Academy Award winner, most remembered for his roles as a cowboy and as Lou Gehrig in The Pride of the Yankees. Scarce A.L.S. 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d., ca. 1940] on his letterhead , to a fan magazine's editor: "...Please extend my best wishes for the New Year to all the readers...and I hope they will like `North West Mounted Police...". Tipped at top to heavier stock, a few wrinkles at margins, else very good. $150-250

1435. ROBERT CRANE American character actor most remembered for his portrayal of Colonel Hogan in the long-running series "Hogan's Heroes". Rare I.S.P. 8" x 10" b/w, a great smiling portrait of Crane in character as Colonel Hogan, nicely signed at left in black marker. Very good. $200-300

1436. JOAN CRAWFORD (1908 - 1977) American actress, an Academy Award winner for her role in Mildred Pierce. D.S. "Joan Crawford" 2pp. 4to., New York, April 29, 1974, a contract with the William Morris agency engaging Crawford in "...feature-length motion pictures..." and "...granting...the exclusive right to furnish to third parties her services...from April 19, 1974 through September 8, 1975...". With the typical file holes at top, boldly signed in blue ink, very good.$75-100

1437. JIMMY DURANTE (1893 - 1980) American entertainer, a vaudeville star known for his gravelly voice, battered hat, and big "schnozz". Excellent vintage I.S.P. "Jimmy" 8" x 10" b/w, 1935, a terrific close-up. Very good. $100-150

1438. DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, SR. (1883 - 1939) American film star, the greatest of the swashbuckling screen heroes who was also a founder of United Artists. S.P. 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" b/w showing Fairbanks and his physical trainer full-length, bracing themselves with their legs in the air while atop a ladder aboard a ship. Boldly signed, very good. $100-150

1440. LILLIAN GISH (1896 - 1993) American film actress who appeared in over 100 films and was one of the silent era's greatest stars. T.L.S. 1p. 4to., [n.p.], May 23, 1972 thanking a man for his "...Lovely book of poems which I so enjoy having and indeed yes I did stay at Irene Cash's cottage and have so many lovely memories...". Usual folds, browning from water damage toward bottom margin, otherwise very good. $40-60

1441. MARGARET HAMILTON (1902 - 1985) American actress remembered for her role as the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz. Fine I.S.P. 10" x 8", a recent print from a still from The Wizard of Oz showing Hamilton in character crouching behind a tree as Dorothy and the Scare Crow walk down the yellow brick road. Boldly inscribed at lower right: "Fr. Ann-Albert & Kevin-witch-wishes from WWW and love, Margaret Hamilton". Three very slight creases affect margin, else near fine. $150-200

1442. REX HARRISON (1908 - 1990) English stage and film actor remembered for his roles in My Fair Lady and Dr. Dolittle. S.P. 8" x 10" b/w publicity photograph for his film The Four Poster showing him (predictably) in a four poster bed with Lili Palmer. Signed with sentiment in black ink toward the bottom margin. A few nicks to margins, otherwise very good. $50-75

ANDY KAUFMAN (1949 - 1984) American comedian and cult figure, started his career with stints on "Saturday Night Live" and a long run on as Latka on "Taxi", later delved into semi-professional wrestling. Died of cancer. Rare A.D.S. signed "Andy Geoffrey Kaufman" and "Andy G. Kaufman" at conclusion, a 1978 federal W-4 form which Kaufman has filled-out, indicating his address, marital status, and social security number. With photograph, fine. $300-400

1445. GRACE KELLY (1929 - 1982) Beautiful American actress who gave up her film career to marry Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Lot of two signed items, includes an I.S.P. "Grace de Monaco" 4" x 6" b/w, a formal pose of Grace and family ca. 1962, inscribed and signed at top, with a stamped signature of Rainier, sold with a T.L.S. "Grace de Monaco" 1p. 4to., Oct. 26, 1956 (just six months after her marriage), a thank you letter for a gift. Photo bears just tiny traces of tape at margins, letter bears a light stain in text, very good.

1446. FRITZ LANG (1890 - 1976) Austrian film director who created, with his wife Theda von Harbou, the pioneering 1924 film Metropolis. T.L.S. on Columbia Pictures Corporation, 1p. 4to., Hollywood, Mar. 6, 1953, to Roger Andrew Caras, in part: "...Thank you very much for returning the pictures of `Siegfried' and sending another set of them. I am very sorry that I couldn't speak on the occasion of the showing of `Siegfried'...Enclosed is your receipt...for the ten stills of `Die Nibelungen'...". Boldly signed in bright blue ink, very good condition. $200-300

1447. VIVIEN LEIGH (1913 - 1967) English film actress best known for her Academy Award-winning role as Scarlett in Gone With the Wind. A.L.S. "Vivien Leigh" 2pp. 8vo., London, Jan. 6, 1961 to a lady friend warmly thanking her for her kind letter and expressing seasonal best wishes. Very good. $200-300

1448. LUCILLE BALL AND DESI ARNAZ (1911 - 1989) American comedic actress and a star, with husband Desi Arnaz, in the classic series "I Love Lucy". A neat pair of D.S., "Lucille Ball Arnaz" 1p. oblong 8vo., Hollywood, Oct. 12, 1953, a partly-printed check ordering payment of $9.37 to Coulter Dry Goods Co. Cancellation punches do not affect signature, very good. Sold with a check signed by DESI ARNAZ, Hollywood, June 1, 1957, ordering payment of $437.50 to Martin Leeds. A great pairing from one of TV's most famous couples!$150-200

1449. THOMAS MITCHELL (1892 - 1962) American actor best remembered for his role of Scarlett's father in Gone With the Wind, won an Oscar for his role in Stagecoach. Scarce D.S. 2pp. legal folio, New York, Mar. 13, 1962, Mitchell's appointment of the prestigious William Morris Agency to represent him for a term of three years. As Mitchell died this same year, this is undoubtedly his last agency contract. File holes at top, overall very good. $200-300

1450. ANNA PAVLOVA (1882 - 1931) Russian ballerina famed for her dance creations and school for the teaching of dance. Superb I.S.P. 8" x 10" sepia, a wonderful portrait showing her reclining on a sofa in furs with her pet dog by her side. Very boldly inscribed in Cyrillic at bottom. Gorgeously presented in a carved gilt frame, in very good condition, unexamined out of frame. $300-400

1451. ROSA PONSELLE (1897 - 1981) American operatic soprano whose repertoire included Carmen, Aida and La Traviata. A nice pairing of items, a lovely vintage I.S.P. 8" x 10" sepia, a dreamy head and shoulders portrait in suit and hat, inscribed at lower left: "To Ted Long, with very best wishes and kind remembrances. Rosa Ponselle 1934". Along with an original Christmas card with the printed greeting: "Miss Rosa M. Ponselle wishes you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year". Toning to mat and slight skipping to ink, overall good condition. Two pieces.$150-200

JAZZ AND BIG BAND SIGNED BOOK An excellent bound 1953 collector's printed `Pop' Scrapbook signed by a large variety of jazz and big band stars of the Forties and Fifties, most of whom have signed beside their respective image and biographical data. 1464. MAE WEST Fine content D.S., 2pp. legal folio, [Maine], July 20, 1956, in which West, as author and copyright holder of the Broadway play Diamond Lil, permits Paramount to continue to have access to the title and content of her work. West was both the author and sultry star of Diamond Lil, and the production proved so successful that in 1932 West was signed by Paramount. Indeed, her first leading role was in She Done Him Wrong, a screen adaptation of Diamond Lil. Very good. $200-300

1465. MAE WEST Important D.S. 3pp. legal folio, New York, Apr. 29, 1932 in which West agrees to give a 7 1/2% of the royalties realized by any film adaptation of novelization of her Broadway play, Diamond Lil. Signed by West and her partner, Mark Linder, at conclusion. West was the both author and sultry star of Diamond Lil, and the production proved so successful that in 1932, the year of this contract, West was signed by Paramount. Indeed, her first leading role was in She Done Him Wrong, a screen adaptation of Diamond Lil. Very good. $200-300

1469. JANIS JOPLIN (1943 - 1970) American rock and blues singer who incorporated the styles of Bessie Smith and Billy Holiday producing albums with Big Brother and the Holding Company and Full Tilt Bogie Band. Died of a heroin overdose in 1970. Rare D.S. "Janis" 2pp. 8vo., a get-well card sent by her to her boyfriend Peter LeBlanc while Joplin was home in Port Arthur Texas in 1965. The front of the card reads: "I'm sending you this card because it looked so sad and lonely on the rack and I thought you would make it feel gay and happy and wanted...", with the inside reading: "...like you did for me...". Joplin signs within: "I LOVE YOU....Janis". Near fine, with envelope upon which she has written "Peter...". Two pieces.$1,000-1,500 21887

1471. PAUL MCCARTNEY (b. 1942) Lead singer and bass player with the Beatles, co-composer with John Lennon of most of the groups dozens of hits. A fabulous Beatles item, an original poster from 1962 printed on melon colored paper, titled "1962 The Beatles Year of Achievement", measures 14" x 18", and lists the group's impressive accomplishments that year along with photographs of the members. Boldly inscribed and signed by McCartney at top right by his image: "To Fran Love Paul McCartney XXXX". Loss to all four corners, significant folds with a couple of tape repairs, general wear, overall just good. A wonderful item for display, worthy of professional restoration. $800-1,200
