1337. J. M. W. TURNER (1775 - 1851) Perhaps the best-loved English Romantic landscape and marine artist, known as "the painter of light". Rare A.L.S. "J M W Turner" with integral holograph address leaf, , 1p. 8vo., Athenaeum, June 20 [1836?], to Clara Wheeler, in part: "...I fear much that I shall be prevented the pleasure of being one of your Party tomorrow Ev'g for after all I must dine out and to a very late hour...". Tiny paperclip stain at top, overall very good. Clara [Wells] Wheeler was a close friend and sketching companion of Turner's practically from her childhood, and the two remained close for much of their lives. $600-800

1338. PABLO PICASSO (1881 - 1973) Spanish painter and sculptor whose changing, powerful thematic style made him the foremost artist of the 20th century. His signature "Picasso" on the title page of a 12pp. 12mo. booklet in French entitled Picasso: Les pages Libres de la Main a Plume bearing an essay and several images of his work. Binding loose, light soiling, otherwise very good with dark, bold signature. $600-800

1339. ALBERT FITCH BELLOWS (1829 - 1883) Landscape artist who followed in the tradition of the Hudson River School. Original pen and ink drawing on a 8 1/2" x 5 3/4" sheet depicting a typical landscape scene of a house and trees by a lake. Boldly signed "A.F. Bellows March 29, 1879". Extreme corners bear very minor dents and one small tear at bottom could be easily matted out, otherwise very good condition. $300-500

1340. EUGENE-LOUIS BOUDIN (1824 - 1898) French painter and a master of light, his scenes included views of the sea and beaches prefigured the Impressionists. Boudin was also one of the first painters to work in open air. Uncommon A.L.S. "E. Boudin" 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Dec. 24, [18]95, in French to a lady, sending her greetings and other social matters. Slight foldtear at right margin, else boldly written and very good. $300-400

1341. AL CAPP (1909 - 1979) American cartoonist, creator of Lil Abner. Rare original pen and ink cartoon strip, three panels, 19" x 6", 1972 showing a winged angel and devil addressing a young lad who is considering the theft of a watermelon and rapidly caving-in. Signed in the last panel. Near fine, matted and framed.$200-300

1342. MARC CHAGALL (1887 - 1985) French artist whose naive style incorporating subjects of Russian and Jewish life made him one of the foremost artists of this century. Good content T.L.S. "Marc Chagall" on La Colline letterhead, 1p. 4to., St. Paul de Vence, Dec. 6, 1973 to "San Lazzaro", in French. Chagall begs an apology from his friend, citing a recent trip to Zurich where a room devoted to his work was to be opened in a museum. He also mentions a proposed book "Chagall Illustrateur", which he feels may not be wanted in the market at that time, and thanks the man for his work in preparing the collection. Fine. $200-300

1343. WILLIAM M. CHASE (1849 - 1916) American painter and likely the first to paint in an impressionistic style which he then imparted to dozens of his students. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Feb. 26, 1900 to a potential client setting forth his prices for various sizes of commissioned works. Slightly uneven toning, else very good. $150-200

1344. FREDERICK E. CHURCH (1826 - 1900) American painter, student of Thomas Cole. Known for his striking landscapes. Good content illustrated A.L.S. with a fine drawing, 2pp. 8vo., [New York], May 12, 1896 explaining to his corespondent that "...The painting you speak of, `Pieonaliations' is owned by Mr. Frank Hecker, Detroit. The idea and composition was given to me by a young girl a Miss Baldwin and I at her request drew it in black and white and Harper published it some years ago in their Bazaar. I afterwards painted it and we shared the profit of both transactions. So you see I was only the median which she used to depict her thoughts...". Below his signature, Church adds an ink sketch of a woman in profile between to lions and signing it again. Very light soiling, otherwise in very good condition. $300-400

1345. JO DAVIDSON (1883 - 1952) American sculptor remembered for his statues of Woodrow Wilson, Foch, Pershing, and other political figures. A.L.S. "Jo Davidson" 2pp. 8vo., Ceret, Pyrenees, Aug. 1, 1913, to Jackson, in part: "...The above is an address that I am sure will keep you guessing. Well, it's about time two and a half years since we last saw each other. But I am going to London with my `Fragments' for a stay of a week and we should like to see you...I feel extremely flattered to find myself placed between Meredith & Nietzsche in your `All Manner of Folk'...". Simply framed in a dark wooden frame, very good condition. $100-150

1346. EDOUARD DETAILLE (1847 - 1912) French painter, known for his painting of military scenes from French history. A.L.S. "Edouard Detaille" 1p. 8vo., [Paris], n.d. In French to M. Detatie, in part: "...Don't forget my plaque and my set of tools...". Very good.$100-150

1347. JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG (1877 - 1960) American painter and illustrator most remembered for his famous poster, modeled on himself, of Uncle Sam ordering "I WANT YOU". Fine, original signed pencil drawing on an octavo sheet, a portrait of author Irvin Cobb, boldly signed and dated 1927 at bottom. Fine.$100-150

1348. MAX FLEISCHER S.P. 3" x 8" b/w, a printed image of Fleischer's cute and controversial creation "Betty Boop" seated side-saddle upon a horse and waving a flag. Signed in full in green ink at bottom. Nicely matted with cream and set into a simple wooden frame. Very good, ideal for display. $150-200

1349. FRIZ FRELENG (1906 - 1995) American artist and animator, creator of "Bugs Bunny", "Yosemite Sam", and a host of other Warner characters. Original pencil drawing on a 6 3/4" x 10 3/4" sheet of white heavy stock, a smiling image of Bugs Bunny signed at bottom. Fine. $150-250

1350. KEITH HARING (d. 1992) American pop artist who started his career painting graffiti in the New York subways, later recognized for his often socially-satirical works. Scarce I.S.P. 4" x 5 1/2" b/w, a reprint of a photo of the artist as a 12-year-old on his Kutztown, Pa. front porch, boldly signed in black marker: "For Adam - K. Haring `88". Fine. $200-300

1351. EDWARD W. KEMBLE (1861 - 1933) American illustrator and cartoonist for many periodicals, best known for his illustrations in Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Redding, Ct., July 5, 1925 to Mark Sullivan: "...my eyes have been almost useless in doing professional work of the required size and I have to confine myself to small things that I can do under a magnifying glass...I have been doing these coon heads [black caricatures] and sending them to my friends...The price $10.00...". Very good. $100-150

1352. EDWARD W. KEMBLE A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., New Rochelle, Jan. 18, 1914 to Mark Sullivan: "...Dear Mr. Editor - Congratulations and good wishes for a great career to one so young...I am just fifty three today...". Slight offset toning, else very good. $60-80

1353. EDWARD W. KEMBLE A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.] to Mark Sullivan: "...Did you get my letter and the cartoon? and has Mr. Collins seen the oil picture I left there?...". Very good. $60-80

1354. OSKAR KOKOSCHKA (1886 - 1980) Austrian painter of lyric landscapes, panoramic cityscapes and allegorical compositions. Bold signature beneath a small reproduction of one of his paintings, likely taken from a gallery catalog. Fine condition, ideal for display. $150-200

1355. TED KEY American cartoonist, creator of the cartoon character "Hazel". His book, Life With Hazel, E.P. Dutton, New York, 1965 inscribed and signed on title page: "For daddy-o Elliott, to whom I owe everything - well - almost, because he made me practice, practice, practice! with affection, Ted" Below Key pens an original drawing of Hazel yelling "CLUNKHEAD!". Very good. $30-50

1356. JOAN MIRO (1893 - 1983) Spanish painter and perhaps the greatest of the Surrealist painters, his works are most noted for the vivid colors and hallucinatory figures. Colorful D.S. 1p. 10" x 12", a color reproduction of the first page of an exposition catalog featuring his work, nicely signed "Miro" in black ink at bottom. Fine. $100-150

1357. THOMAS MORAN (1837 - 1926) American painter of landscapes, his works most often portraying scenes of the American West. Fine, bold signature on a card: "Yours truly T. Moran 1902". Fine. $100-150

1358. ROBERT MOTHERWELL (b. 1915) American painter and a founder of abstract expressionism, he later adopted a surrealist technique of automatism. Scarce original signed drawing executed in black ink on bright white heavy stock, a vertical line topped by a triangle with two circles within, signed in full at bottom and dated 1980. Fine. $150-250

1359. ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860 - 1939) Czech painter and illustrator famous for his poster designs and costumes for Sarah Bernhardt, a leading Art Nouveau painter and designer. Wonderful illustrated A.L.S. "Your Daddy" written in block print to his young daughter Jiricek, 2pp. oblong 8vo., [New York, n.d.]. In part: "...How did you spend your name day? Did you count the candles on your cake? Do you know that there were half a dozen of them?...Tomorrow I will go down to town to see if there is an Indian with a bow and arrow and a tomahawk to tell him to send it to you...Didn't you forget English?...Think about your daddy just as your daddy thinks about you. Kiss from you daddy...". In the middle of the first page Mucha has added a nice touch: an ink drawing of a birthday cake on a doily and sporting six candles. Folds, otherwise fine condition.$200-300

1360. PIERRE PUVIS DE CHAVANNES (1824 - 1898) French painter known for his murals in many prominent buildings. Scarce A.L.S. "Puvis de Chavannes" 1p. sm. 8vo., [Paris], 1892, in French to an unnamed recipient, in part: "...It is I who thank you, dear Sir, for the great and deep joy which you have left me with the remembrance of your annual banquet for the general association of students in Paris...". Boldly written, a few small and insignificant stains, overall very good.$100-150

1361. LARRY RIVERS (b. 1923) American pop artist. Original signed drawing on a 11 1/2" x 12" piece of heavy beige stock, a box-like structure signed and dated at center "Larry Rivers Dec. 1980". Fine. $100-150 26282

1362. NORMAN ROCKWELL (1894 - 1978) American painter and illustrator known for his homey, American genre paintings. T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Stockbridge, Mass., May 3, 1977 to a couple noting that he was "...pleased that you enjoyed your visit to Stockbridge and the Old Corner House...". Matted and framed with an image of his famous multiple self-portrait. One horizontal fold, otherwise in fine condition. Not examined out of frame.$100-150

1363. NORMAN ROCKWELL S.P. 3 1/2" x 4 3/4" color, a reproduction of a Rockwell painting showing a dejected Chicago baseball team with booing fans behind their dugout, signed in full in the white bottom margin. Fine. $100-150

1364. PAUL SIGNAC (1863 - 1935) French Impressionist painter, with Seurat a developer of Pointillism and a principal Neo-Impressionist, known for his watercolors of landscapes and seascapes. A.L.S. "Paul Signac" on Societe des Artistes Independants letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., Paris, Jan. 30, 1933 in French to the Director. In part: "...I have received your letter of the 27th requesting one of my drawings for your magazine Beaux Arts. I will provide it with pleasure, but I need to look at the last two issues in order that my art work may conform with its style...". File holes in left margin clear of all writing, else fine condition. $200-300

1365. SIMEON SOLOMON (1840 - 1905) British orthodox Jewish painter in the Pre-Raphaelite style, produced many allegorical and religious works. His later life was darkened by public humiliation and alcoholism. Rare A.L.S. "S. Solomon" 1p. 8vo., London, Nov. 19, 1890, to Mrs. Payne, in part: "...I'm sorry. I have to give up dances during the winter. I find they interfere with my work. However, if I find myself free, I'll apply to you for a ticket...". Along with a nice S.P. 3 1/2" x 5" sepia, a postcard format photograph showing the painter from the waist, up, with palette and brushes in hand. Boldly signed at bottom. Two pieces, very good condition.$300-400

1365A. FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT (1867 - 1959) American architect, on of the most influential of all time, he was the creator of so-called organic architecture utilizing novel shapes and incorporating his buildings into their settings. D.S. 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], the title page from his 1932 book An Autobiography, inscribed and signed: "Fred Pedifer from Frank Lloyd Wright". Fine. Scarce in full signature. $400-600

1366. DISNEY ANIMATOR NORM FERGUSON Disney animator from 1929-1953, animated dozens of short cartoons and served as a directing animator on most of Disney's films with additional work on Pinocchio, Fantasia, Cinderella, and Peter Pan Superb original black in drawing on a 6" x 7" album page, depicts Mickey Mouse full-length and smiling at the viewer, signed at bottom. Fine. $300-400

1367. DISNEY ANIMATOR Original Disney animator's pencil drawing on a 76" x 7" album page, ca. 1940, a running female satyr signed by animator JIM BROTERS [?] at bottom. Very good. $75-100

1368. DISNEY ANIMATOR WEBB SMITH Disney studios screenwriter and cartoonist, the chief writer for the classics Snow White, Pinocchio, and Fantasia. Original ink drawing on a 6" x 7" green album page, a profile of Pluto inscribed at top, signed at bottom and dated 1941. On the verso is an original signed pencil drawing by Disney art director and designer MARY BLAIR depicting a needle-nosed lady full-length. Very good. $100-150

1369. DISNEY ANIMATOR TED SEARS Disney studios animator and a key element in the films Snow White, Peter Pan, and the various South America-themed films. Original signed pencil drawing on a pale green 6" x 7" album page, depicts Donald Duck riding a bucking bronco, reminiscent of the film "The Three Caballeros". Signed and dated 1941 at upper-right. Very good. $150-200

1370. DISNEY ANIMATOR FRANKLIN THOMAS Disney cartoonist, a pioneer who was one of Disney's "Nine Old Men". Original signed pencil drawing of Minnie Mouse on a 7" x 6" sheet, ca. 1941, showing her in a coquettish, full-length pose, signed at bottom. On verso appears about four bars of the theme song and lyrics from the Disney film "The Reluctant Dragon", signed by its composer CHARLES WOLCOTT at bottom. Very good. $200-300
